So Much Growth

Dear Jane,

So much has happened since I last wrote to you. A lot of it doesn't matter. What does matter is how much you've grown! You crawl, you stand yourself up, you dance to music (on your bum), and you're always trying to talk to us.
I had high hopes of writing down the dates for when you hit all your "firsts," but I now realize that it's almost impossible. Take your first words, for example: You say real words all the time. However, you probably don't mean to say them. We have no idea how we will distinguish your real first word or words from everything you've said before that!
Oh well... I guess it doesn't really matter. The one thing I hope I never forget is how you always say the word "turtles." You even whisper it to your dad while he changes your diaper. It's adorable and hilarious.
You're a doll.
All my love,
Mom

Best Mom Ever

Dear Mom,
I originally meant to write a post to you on Mother's Day, but I'm sure you'll forgive me since I spent a large chunk of the day in the ER with Jane. I don't really have much in the way of reasons for the rest of the time I've missed, but I guess that's motherhood.
I found Facebook to be quite entertaining on Sunday while everyone was posting about their moms. People kept saying things like "I'm sorry to everyone else out there, but MY mom is the absolute best." Sooooo many people said that. I just had to scoff and shake my head sadly at them while I screamed "YOU FOOLS!" inside my head. Why? Because my mom is obviously the very best.
As part of your gift, I thought I would take a page out of Amanda's book and entertain you with memories of days gone by. You often cursed me to have offspring that would be just like me, and these are some of the instances when I may have been at my worst:

Barfing On Your Slippers
~ The worst part is that I did this multiple times. I did NOT learn my lesson. For some reason, I thought that it was really important to tell you that I was going to throw up right before I had to throw up. Certainly not my finest hour(s).

Spider Deaths
~ I made you kill them. All the time. If you refused and told me to do it myself, I had a total meltdown. That one will likely come back to bite me.

Sneaking Pets In The House
~ I'm namely talking about Petey, here... The little kitten I found one Halloween. You told me I couldn't feed him and he couldn't come in the house. I immediately did both of those things. You caught me with him in my room and made me take him outside. You were also quite vigilant in making sure I couldn't sneak him in again. You did cave in the morning and feed Petey. At that point, I thought I had you locked up. Then you made me find the owner, who ended up being super creepy. I still think we should have kept poor, little Petey.

Crashing Into Stuff With Cars
~ I hit a dumpster and our mailbox with the Suburban. I left all kinds of dents in that thing.

Kicking A Hole In The Door
~ I thought it would make more of a statement if I kicked it shut instead of slamming it shut. It did.

I'm sure there are many, many more. I was a tough kid to handle. You were certainly a trooper! I'm glad we got through it though... I can't imagine having a better mom than you!

All my love,
Jill

Being a Mommy

Dear Jane,
Today doesn't really seem like a special kind of day, even though its Mother's Day. It is our first and, like other holidays, it will take years for our little family to perfect in our own way. In the meantime, it's just another day as a full-time mom. For now, that means a cranky baby who doesn't want to take her nap, learning a new calling at church AND teaching a lesson all with you in one arm since your dad is at work, and pushing through the day in a sleepless trance. I'll still do laundry, I'll still wash dishes and I'll still change my shirt and come back to you each and every time you throw up on me.
That's what it is to be a good mom. You must be patient, loyal, steadfast and ready for anything. Our families love us, but they aren't always good at showing it or appreciating us the way we deserve. I was guilty of it and so will you. I fear the day you become a teenager and really start to take things out on me the way I did with my mom.
Even so, I wouldn't give this job up for all the money on the world. You make every day special. You make every day Mother's Day.
All my love,
Mom

Zoo Days

Dear Jane,
Today we took you to the zoo for the very first time. As it turns out, you're still a little young to enjoy that type of experience. You were more interested in the glass enclosures than the animals inside them. You certainly do enjoy the small things in life. Don't lose that.

Cool Cat

Dear Jane,
You're the coolest!

Big Girl

Dear Jane,
You slept in your own bed last night while your parents stayed in their own room (mostly).
The following pictures were taken this morning. They show one proud baby and one nervous, haggard mommy who is still getting used to this whole idea and obviously didn't sleep well.

Mom

Tired Daddy

Dear Jane,

Your dad must have been super sleepy last night before he tucked you into bed.

How do I know? This morning I found a diaper in your laundry and a onesie in the diaper pail.

All my love,
Mom

P.S. We gave you your first solid food two days ago. You did amazing! Still no sign of sleeping in your own room, though...

My Wants

Dearest Baby Girl,

A stay-at-home mom has very few desires. I have no need for beauty or riches. My life is complete when I see your beautiful smile.

Though, it would be nice to be able to go to the bathroom with the door closed on occasion...

All my love,
Mom

Joking

Dear Janebug,

Just kidding. Right after I blogged, I went to your room and retrieved you. You slept in our room again.

I wasn't ready yet.

Mom

Good Nights

Dear Jane,

Tonight is the first night I'm letting you sleep alone in your room.

I'm very nervous about this.

Music Musings

Dear Jane,
If I've learned one thing today, it's that music really does soothe the savage beast.
You've had trouble getting to sleep recently. Even when we do our bedtime ritual and go through all the standard steps, you still constantly fight sleep. Gramma says that it's because you don't want to miss a single thing in life. I agree.
Today was totally different. We started playing you a couple of my favorite songs and you fell right to sleep. You even let us put you in your crib for a nap! That's a first! Ordinarily you wouldn't allow such a thing. The second we lay you down, you start crying. You've always loved to cuddle. Something is just different when you hear music. It lulls you into a deep slumber that you just can't resist.
I do miss cuddling though...

Mom

Keep on Trucking

Dear Janey,
Things are looking up! You dad and I both got jobs, won the lottery and bought a house!
April Fool!
Things are the same. Your dad was turned down for yet another job and we continue to struggle. We've been very lucky to have a great support system, so you have never had the chance to go hungry or want for anything. Still, there are so many things that your dad and I wish we could provide you with. The economy is terrible, which means that we can't seem to get it together for the time being. I hope that all changes soon. I'm starting to lose faith in a lot of things.
All my love,
Mom

Keep on Rolling

Dear Jane,

You rolled completely over for the first time today!

But no one saw it.

I was folding laundry and your dad was watching a movie. You were playing nicely on the floor (on your back) with your toys and then I looked down and you were on your stomach! I gasped, your dad looked down and we both screeched for joy and then realized how disappointed we were that we didn't see it.

Then we tried to make you do it again.

You refused. Stubborn kid.

All my love,
Mom

In A Scrape

Dear Jane,
You got your first self-inflicted injury today. That sounds kind of weird to say, but here's what I mean: you have had minor injuries in the past from fingernail clipping and the like. Today was the first time you were actually strong enough to hurt yourself (and by today, I mean yesterday, since I'm posting this at 1 am). I found this little bruise on your knee when I was changing your diaper. I knew it wasn't serious, but I still yelled to your dad because it was the first time this has happened (talk about dorky first-time parents). We aren't totally sure what happened, but we think you bashed a toy into your leg.
It seems silly, but I feel like its important to mark this moment. From now on, you'll do all kinds of stuff to hurt yourself. You'll do some on purpose and some will happen as a result of circumstances around you. Some will be emotional, most will be physical... Everything from scrapes and bruises to a broken heart. After all, you come from a long line of clumsy people. I just thought you might like to know how it all began.
Happy five months, baby girl. I'm both impressed and saddened by how long (and short) I was able to keep you perfectly safe.
All my love,
Mom

The Blahs

Dear Jane,
I know I haven't been posting regularly. A lot of days are tough because its the exact same thing over and over again. I'm not really complaining about it... I enjoy routine. You also enjoy routine, so we both end up in a pretty decent mood by the end of the day as long as nobody screws with our schedule. Again, it's not a complaint. It just doesn't leave much for me to write about. Trust me... When you smack me in the face with something new, I will definitely write about it.
You are currently teething again, so you're angry most of the day, which means I'm currently exhausted. So off to bed.
All my love,
Mom

Perfect Mayhem

Dear Jane,
I've definitely broken my New Year's resolution. I promised to blog every day. A lot of days, that's really hard, especially lately. Your dad and I haven't been working since before you were born and the financial strain is hitting me hard. I get so overwhelmed and when I try to blog during that time, bad things happen. I write better than I speak... It's the easiest way for me to communicate. When I write about something terrible, I see the full impact of the situation... Worse than any other time.
So I've skipped those days.
That's one trait that I desperately hope you don't get from me; my desire for perfection. I know we're all human and we all make mistakes. I allow for that in others but never for myself. I expect too much all the time, and I constantly let myself down. When I do that, I feel like I'm letting everyone down; you, your dad, my parents... Virtually everyone that could possibly be connected with the situation. For you, I want all the best. I also want realistic expectations and the knowledge that "good" is often good enough. "Great" and "perfect" aren't necessarily better.
So I will continue to blog with unfailing regularity. Some days it just won't happen and I'll try not to beat myself up about it.
It's a small step, but you have to start somewhere.
All my love,
Mom

Good to the Gimp

Dear Kid,
If being pregnant with you and hauling you around as a baby has taught me one thing (outside of actual parenting knowledge), it's that people are always nice to a pregnant woman or a woman with a small baby. Before I was pregnant with you or if I'm out now doing stuff without you, no one gives me the time of day. I'm basically invisible.
Huge Prego Jill and Mommy Jill get an entirely different treatment. People might as well roll out the red carpet! Everyone I meet gives me a big smile and is more than happy to help me with anything from letting me cross the parking lot to pumping my gas for me.
It's the strangest thing how we, as a race, don't feel the need to help another average human being, but if the person is pregnant or has a very small child (once they get older, you become invisible again or worse... Get dirty looks for bringing angry kids out in public) or if they're old and gimpy (but not freaky in any way like mental problems or B.O.), people will suddenly go out of their way to be helpful.
So here's the lesson, kid: always treat everyone like they're pregnant.
All my love,
Mom

Failure

Dear Jane,
I read an article today by a woman named Lyz Lenz. Learn this lesson young... It's important.

Even at 2, my daughter is wary of risk. She tells me to "be careful" when I stand on a stool and reminds her friends, "don't tip ovah!" when they climb the stairs. You'd think she was parroting our language, but she's not. I've rarely had to tell Ellis to be careful. Just the opposite. I'm constantly encouraging her to jump, leap and tip over all she can. I want her to push her limits, to ride the edge, even if that means falling and failing. Yes, I want my daughter to fail.
When I was a Junior in High School, I got my first A-. I moved in the middle of the year from a small, rural high school where the homecoming king drove a tractor to school to a large, suburban high school with Mercedes on display in the parking lot and name brand jeans in the halls. The transition was jarring and isolating. As a result, my study habits took a nose dive and I got my first less than perfect grade. I handled it like any honor roll brunette who was on both the debate and mock trial teams would: I bawled my eyes out. I begged my mom to let me drop the class and remove the ugly minus sign from my transcript. She refused to sign the form. "No," she said. "This class was your choice. Plus, it's a good lesson in failure. Better to fail now and learn how to handle it, than fail as an adult and fall apart."
I thought her response was impossibly cruel and I spent weeks writing tortured journal entries about the incident. "Doesn't she want me to have a future?" I wrote in my bubbly teenage cursive. "Doesn't she care?" It wasn't my last failure. I was rejected from my first-choice college, I got a B in college Latin (my first) and I had to apply to 10 different graduate schools before I was accepted. And now, I am in a field where I am frequently rejected 10 times before my first cup of coffee. I'm a writer. I pitch editors story ideas and for the first seven years, it seemed that for every "yes" there were thirty "no's." It's getting better now, or I've just stopped counting. Yet, on my bad days, I feel that failure like the 17-year-old girl sprawled on her floral bedspread, weeping tears of anguish. But I wouldn't exchange this life for anything more ego soothing.
In my daughter, I see glimpses of that part of me. I see her caution and her perfectionism. Her desire to do things right and I know, that of all the lessons I want to teach her failure is the first and foremost on the list.
There is a new trend in parenting. The so-called "snow plow" parents come between their children and failure, smoothing their path and easing their way into the world. And I understand this desire, I do. I carry my kid up the stairs way more often than what is good for her. I pad her falls and coddle her cries. But in the end, I know that becoming accustomed to failure isn't just loser talk, it's how character is created. Thomas Edison, the Steve Jobs of a much earlier generation, didn't become a household name by evading hardship. The man took risks. During his many attempts to perfect the light bulb, he famously noted, "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work."
Parents want their children to be great and achieve their goals, but protecting them from failure only serves to make them mediocre -- willing to quit at the slightest obstacle. A life lived without failure is not success, it's mediocrity. I don't want to teach my daughter to quit or that I will pave her way. I want to teach her to pull back, reformulate and try again and again and again. I think of Madeleine L'Engle, who was 44 before she published her first novel. Or John Keats, who died a "failure." I think of Leland Stanford and the robber barons of California, who became great on a full-on gamble with their last pennies and an unstable railroad engineer. Without risks, without chances and without failures, the Wright Brothers (high school drop-outs) wouldn't have been able to soar.
So, I push her to the edge of her comfort. We make messes. We fall on pavement. And in high school, when she sobs over her flagging grades, I will tell her the same thing my mother told me: "I want you to fail. Better you fail now and learn how to handle it."
And if she doesn't curse me out in her angsty bubbly script, then she's not learning.

I love you. I'll try to let you fail.
All my love,
Mom

Aftermath

Dear Jane,

I had so many plans for today, but none of them were completed. You took up all of my time.

Today you were a sad, sad baby. Your legs must have been sore from your shots yesterday and I bet you weren't feeling tip top in other ways either.

So you decided to cry all day.

That made me want to beat my head against a wall.

We couldn't do anything to make you feel better. We've just been waiting it out as much as possible and trying to get you to sleep whenever we can. The silence in those short moments is absolutely brilliant. I never thought nothing could sound so good.

Ordinarily I love it when you're awake and alert, but today brought nothing but tortured screams. You wouldn't even eat for most of the day, which always makes me super nervous for you. I hope you're feeling better tomorrow... for the sake of everyone in the house.

All my love,
Mom

Four Months

Dear Jane,

Today you turned four months old.

Unfortunately, you also had a doctor appointment today. That means you had your vaccinations today.

You were wicked pissed. You cried for 15 minutes before you were calm enough for us to leave without people thinking that we had just beaten you.

There were two plus sides, though:

1. I didn't cry at all this time and I was actually able to help hold you down while the nurse administered your shots.
2. The crying wore you out so much that you've been asleep on me ever since. I do love the baby cuddles.

Feel better, little one.

All my love,
Mom

Jenny Jump Up

Dear Jane,
You just love your jumper. It's just about the cutest thing I've ever seen. Your favorite time is when we put it in the front door and you get to see the big, wide world outside. You'll sit and talk to the birds, the trees and the sky for ages. It's precious.
All my love,
Mom

Sleepy Baby

Dear Jane,
I love it when you fall asleep on me.

Valentine's Day

Dear Jane,
I know it's late but I thought I'd tell you about your first Valentine's Day.
It was a good one. Your daddy and I took you to Gramma's while we snuck Damburger into a dollar movie (James Bond. Your dad's choice.). Even though you weren't with us, I couldn't stop thinking of you because Skyfall is the first movie you ever saw. It was over Thanksgiving when your Grandma and Grandpa Haskett were here to visit. You loved the colors in the opening sequence. You did not love the sound of gunfire.
Anyway, your dad was kind enough to let me have a nap afterward until we had to pick you up. Then we had a couple quiet hours of family time before it was time for a Valentine dinner. The ward put it on. Technically, it was ADULTS ONLY, but we brought you anyway. We also brought Gramma and DziaDzia. It was tons of fun! We had a great meal, good conversation with the people at our table and you were entirely hilarious. It was a candlelight dinner and you were fascinated with the fake candles. Couldn't take your eyes off them. We loved your enthusiasm.
Then it was home and bed. A good day had by all.
All my love,
Mom
P.S. First grade made you a bunch of valentines. Adorable.

Sick of It

Dear Kid,
I haven't been posting. We've all had the flu pretty badly and it's all I could do to keep up with it. I even fell asleep with you in my arms a couple times while waiting for someone to take you for a while (which I really hate doing because I always feel like I'm going to drop you or something terrible).
Don't worry. Recovery is approaching. So are regular blog posts.
All my love,
Mom

Button-holed

Dear Janey,
Your dad hates buttons. I've never met anyone who hates buttons as much as he does. The funny thing is that this incredible rage didn't present itself until you came along. What's funnier is that the buttons he hates aren't even real buttons... They're the little button snaps on your jammies.
That man has the most difficult time getting them to line up. Your collar is always half-cocked in one direction or the other when he dresses you. He regularly throws up his hands in defeat and has me finish getting you ready for bed because he hates those darn snaps so much. I guess we'll have to start buying you more clothes with zippers.
All my love,
Mom

Teething

Dear Kid,
You're teething. It makes you very angry. That makes Mommy very tired. Let's hope it's over soon... For both our sakes.

Another First

Dear Jane,
Today you said your first word! Hi. You said hi to me and Gramma. Now, most people wouldn't count it because you were bound to combine two sounds that made an actual word; Sort of like giving chimps typewriters... They will eventually write the complete works of Shakespeare (not that it's hard because that guy is a total hack).
Still, I'm counting it. Your Gramma heard it too, so I'm not even being a delusional parent who thinks their kid is a genius. You totally said it.
Your dad says it doesn't count. Pretty sure he's just jealous because he missed it.
All my love,
Mom

Super Lame

Dear Em,
Today was the Super Bowl. Jane's first Super Bowl. I'm sure you were overjoyed because her first SB was a game where the 49ers played. I'm sure you would have been more overjoyed if they had won.
Oh well. It was a good game. The 49ers almost came back to win it after a tough start. Some may attribute that to the power outage that occurred right after halftime. It was pretty entertaining. The Harbaugh boys, one of whom was coaching each team, were pretty ticked about it. You could totally read their lips when they were yelling at the guys who ran the stadium. Not nice words. On the plus side, you got to be on TV during the Super Bowl with Dad when they showed a clip from the last time the 49ers dealt with a power outage during a game. Granted, you were a teeny little speck surrounded by other teeny little specks in a zoomed out shot of the stadium, but hey man... It was still national television. Pretty sure you could put that on a resume or something.
Maybe next year they'll get those rings. And by then, Jane will be big enough to cheer for a team. You'll have to fight with Matt about which team it will be, though.
All my love,
Jill

Big Steps

Dear Janey,

You almost rolled over today! I'm counting it as fully rolling over, since the only problem was that your shoulder kept getting in the way and stopping you from making a complete turn. Your dad and I were absolutely fascinated. We took a ridiculous amount of video and sent it all to EVERYONE. Annoyingly proud parents? Yes, I think so.
We also put you on your stomach for a while and you scooched around on the floor. It won't be long until you're crawling! We are too excited.
All my love,
Mom

Flirt

Dear Janey,

You love attention. Most if the time you won't sleep unless someone is holding you. Plus, you're always doing something cute so people will watch you.

Tonight you amped up the adorable a few notches.

We have occasionally been letting you watch the TV with your daddy. You really love the colors and all the different shapes. Usually, that's all you see, but when you watches TV today, you saw more.

You were actually able to identify faces on the screen from across the room! They would smile and you would coo and smile back at them! It was hilarious!

You do something new and fun every day. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!

All my love,
Mom

What A Snooze

Dear Janey,
I love watching you sleep.

GGNonno

Dear Jane,
Your only living great grandfather is quite a character. He is a sour, jowly old man who tries exceptionally hard to take the fun out of every situation.
I'm also pretty sure his mind is going, since he accidentally called you "Jean" the other day.
But he loves you quite a bit. He's opened a savings account for you and is always giving you gifts. He has been entirely unpredictable in what he will say or do. He has cooed over you and rocked you when you were sad. He demanded to be the one to open your savings account and to give you your first ice cream cone (once you're old enough). He even picked out his favorite picture of you and keeps telling people about it. He has it stashed on his iPad to show everyone he knows (and that's a lot of people).
You really do turn heads everywhere you or your picture go.
All my love,
Mom
Here is GGNonno's favorite picture of you to date:

Sleepy

Dear Jane,
You have slept almost as much today as when we first brought you home from the hospital. I'm pretty sure it's because you aren't feeling well, but it's hard to dislike the fact that you want to snuggle with Mommy the whole day. Your dad says I'm being a crazy, paranoid overprotective mother. Perhaps so. But it's my right, since I carried you and pushed you out of my body, so the two of you can just get over it.
Eventually, I had to lay you down because I REALLY had to go to the bathroom. You took the opportunity to strike poses in your sleep. Little weirdo.
All my love,
Mom

Worrywart

Dear Jane,
You've had a raspy voice and a snotty nose all weekend. This morning you had a bit of a temperature. It's lucky it wasn't anything too serious or I would have flipped out. Still, I kept a close eye on you today. Your fever went down in the afternoon and you seem better now. It helps that you've been sleeping a little more than usual the past few days. If all is well tomorrow, I should be able to leave you home with Gramma while I finish a couple hours of work at First 5.
Here's hoping for the best!
All my love,
Mom

Friday Frenzy

Dear Janey,

Today has been a looooong day.

It started as most Fridays do in Mrs. Thornton's first grade. It was a particularly cute day, though. One of the students, Anthony, had his birthday today and brought in cookies. He had a few left over after each of his classmates had one. He gave one to me, one to your Gramma and then broke off a small piece of a cookie, presented it to me and said "This is for baby Jane."

It a was super sweet. I felt bad telling him that you're still on an all-liquid diet. He did earn himself a treat, though. Next week I'm going to make cupcakes for all the first graders.

At noon, we headed down to First 5. There was still some extra help work they needed done. While there, your Aunt Mary gave me tickets for Viking Skate Country. She couldn't use them and they were only good for tonight. Shortly afterward, you threw a tremendous fit and we had to leave.

We got home between 4:30 and 5 pm. You continued to throw a fit off and on while I started dinner and washed the dishes. Gramma came by a little after 6 and had white bean chili with us (YUM) and then gave you a bath. Actually, she gave you a bath first to soothe you and calm you down, since you were in such a bad mood. Then she ate. It's lucky that white bean chili reheats well.

Then came sweet silence. You finally fell asleep. While you were unconscious, your dad and I snuck out to go skating. It was the first date we've had since you were born! We had a ton of fun, even though we were probably only out for an hour or so. I just hope that you get your dad's balance. I am not a capable skater. Even so, coupled with my sweet dance moves (i.e. my dorky dance moves), I was still one of the coolest people there, along with your dad. Redding has some pretty huge nerds and they apparently hang out at the skating rink. It's like nerdvana (nerd nirvana) out there!

As we were putting our shoes on to leave. I managed to throw out my back and I had to take tiny little baby steps all the way out to the car and move my top half as little as possible. It looked ridiculous (and I was STILL one of the coolest people there)!

Now we're home. We watched a little TV while I enjoyed the cotton candy I got at the rink. It's bedtime for me. Like I said... Loooooong day.

All my love,
Jill

P.S. You screamed so emphatically today that you actually made yourself hoarse. You are literally on the verge of laryngitis. I didn't even know that could happen to a baby! It's disheartening and adorable all at once.

Nicknames

Dear Jane,
Your father and I (and Gramma) have come up with several brilliant nicknames for you during your short time with us. Here are some of them:
•Kid
•Weirdo
•Crabbypants
•Little Miss
•Squeaks (because even before you started cooing, you would squeak in your sleep. Cutest sound ever and it kept a first-time neurotic mother from having to get up every five minutes to make sure you were still breathing)
•Big Blue Eyes
•Chubby Cheeks
•Monkey Toes
•Pretty Girl
•Bubbles (because you blow the biggest spit bubbles I've ever seen)
•Janey
•Zany Janey
•Bug-a-boo
•Rage Monster
•Cutest Baby Ever (Gramma's favorite)
•Tiny Old Man Bum (because you're still having trouble filling out the bum of your pants)

Aren't you so glad to have parents like us?? Don't worry. I'll continue to embarrass you for years to come.
All my love,
Mom

Is it me?

Dear Jane,
It seems to me that most of my peers who have become mothers in the past few years are SUPER sensitive about their parenting.
Most of these women complain about one of two things (or sometimes both of them):
•when they were pregnant, strangers would come up to them and touch their bellies without asking for permission
•someone gave them some unsolicited advice/words of wisdom
I've never identified myself as someone who is super laid back, but I feel like all these chicks are overreacting a bit. Maybe they're just around a nutty group of people and their rants have true merit. I just haven't had anything close to that experience. When I was pregnant with you, I only ever had one stranger come up and touch my belly and, though I was annoyed, it had nothing to do with his actions. I was mad because it was hot as blue blazes outside, I had just eaten something that wasn't agreeing with my delicate (ha) constitution and you were already several days overdue and I was ready to get you OUT.
As for the advice, I can't say I mind it. Maybe it's because I'm fairly certain that I'll do that to young girls in the future. Maybe it's because becoming a mother had softened my interactions with annoying people to some degree. I can't be certain. It's definitely not worth whining about, though. Sometimes I actually get some pretty good advice!
Oh well. I guess it doesn't hurt me to let those girls get their blood pressure up over something trivial.
Look at me... I'm growing up! It's boring me already. :)

Mom

All Around Momma

Dear Kid,
I am exhausted. The past two days I've been working at First 5 doing some extra help activities. Because I am your main food source and you refuse to drink from a bottle, you have been coming with me.

I'm pretty sure it's the most horrible idea I've ever had.

You see, you've been extra fussy lately and now require constant attention. Ordinarily, I'd love to give it to you, but that does make it kind of difficult to actually accomplish anything. It was basically chaos. You would be happy for about 8 seconds at a time, during which someone would want to hold you (usually your Aunt Mary). You would smile and flirt with a couple strangers and then be returned to me. At that point, you would promptly throw a hissy fit. I would bounce you and pat you and talk to you, but none of it worked. I even tried feeding you several times, but you refused to eat. Seriously! You should be eating every 2-4 hours but you went about 6 or 8. You are a crazy girl. I guess I could have left you with your daddy after all.

And to all the mommies out there who do it all and are actually half decent at both jobs, I applaud you. It's stinking hard.

All my love,
Mom

Always Learning

Dear Kid,
I swear, you learn something new every day. It's amazing how fast you're growing. You can officially hold up your head all by yourself. It's awesome!
Also, tonight you decided to punch me REALLY hard and then when I cried out in pain, you laughed at me. That might be even more advanced than gaining muscle in your neck!
One thing is for sure... You are quite the pistol.
All my love,
Mom

No More Tears

Dear Janey,
The past few days have been rough. You're upset all the time and we don't really know why. DziaDzia thinks its gas. Gramma thinks you might start teething soon. Your dad says we're all crazy and you aren't crying any more than usual. I'm pretty sure he's only saying that to keep me from developing a twitch, though.
I hope we figure it out soon. You are wearing me out, kid.
All my love,
Mom

Weird

Dear Janey,
I think it's important to tell you about everything; not just the cutest stuff.
Today you cried and screamed for about an hour before you fell asleep. It was worse than normal. I do kinda like it though... I love that you always end up falling asleep on my chest. It's adorable.
Also, your soft spot really freaks me out. At the right angles and in the right light, I can see your brain pulsing. So weird. It has made me super careful with you, though. That's a plus.

Mom

Did It Again...

Dear Janey,
Dang it! Missed another one! I blame myself for that. I walked around like a zombie yesterday. Sleep has alluded me lately. Every time I lay down to take a nap and catch up, my brain goes into overdrive. I think about the billion other things that need to get done and it elevates my heart rate. So I just end up lying in bed until I give up and hang out with you for a while instead. I guess that makes it not all bad... :)

Mom

Missed Monday

Dear Janey,
I already missed a day! I guess it was because it was such a big day for you. Yesterday you were three months old! It's crazy how fast you're growing. You've become so chatty lately, especially when you have mommy or daddy's attention. It's entirely adorable. You flail your little arms and legs in absolute excitement. You also love to watch basketball with your daddy.
You just can't do anything that isn't adorable.
All my love,
Mom
P.S. I'll try not to miss a day again.

Same Old, Same Old

Dear Janey,
Today at 5:30 pm, I asked your dad if it was okay for me to go to bed yet. I'm totally wiped out. As I still get up every night to feed you, usually multiple times, and run around during the day AND have been missing the daily naps that I'm supposed to be taking to keep up with you, I'm a little burnt out. I can't really complain though. It's a real kick in the pants to be your mommy.
I can't help but wonder about certain things that seem to happen to me almost daily... I wonder if these kind of things happen to other mothers as well, or if I'm a special kind of dope. Here's an example from today:
Your dad and I were asked to give the opening and closing prayers for sacrament meeting today. We graciously accepted. However, when we do give prayers, I like to go first so I can focus on church instead of freaking out about doing the prayer for a whole hour. I told your dad I was going to go first no matter what, but his name was in the program and they announced he would be doing the opening prayer, so he talked me into waiting to do mine. Shortly after sacrament was passed, you decided to drop a giant deuce in your pants. You also were insatiably hungry. So I took you off to the mother's lounge. I figured I had plenty of time, since there was a High Council speaker and they are notoriously long-winded. This guy must have been new, because he did not have that distinction. So as the closing hymn began, I was jamming stuff into your diaper bag and hoping that it had at least four verses. I managed to get back in time to do the closing prayer, but not in time to drop you off with your father first. I had to walk right up to the front, plunk you on the Bishop's lap, fold my arms and give that prayer. I was so worried you were going to freak out in front of everyone that I don't even remember what I said.
Afterward your dad took advantage of my obvious distress by telling me that I said "God bless the puppies" while I was up there. He's lucky he told the truth before I got the chance to apologize to the Bishop or he would have been sleeping on the couch for a week. Sigh. I can't even go to church without creating a three-ring circus out of something.
Oh well. All's well that ends well. Besides. it gave me the opportunity to show you off to the whole church at once.
All my love,
Mom

Football Saturday

Dear Janey,
Today was mostly spent at Gramma and DziaDzia's house watching football. You see, the Broncos (your daddy's team) and the 49ers (your DziaDzia and Auntie Em's team) played in back-to-back games (against other teams).
Your father wanted to see both games and DziaDzia thought it would be fun for us to all come over and watch them. That way, we could make a day of it and order pizza, etc. It was his ploy to get us to come. Your dad didn't need any convincing, but football bores me and your Gramma wasn't around to make snarky comments about the game with me. DziaDzia needed me to come because if I wasn't there, you wouldn't be there either. Hence the pizza ordered from one of my favorite places. Man, that guy knows how to play me.
Lucky for me, I had some work to do for First 5. I'm working for them from home right now. So while your dad and DziaDzia yelled and screamed at the TV, I sat in the corner and worked on a spreadsheet. It was nice because I was able to be super productive AND have awesome pizza AND let you spend a nice, long chunk of time with DziaDzia on his day off.
Overall, a good day for everyone except for the puppies, who were abandoned at home during our time out. It was also a pretty rough day for your daddy because the Broncos lost. By the time you're old enough to read this, I'm sure you'll have noticed that he becomes quite the sad sack when one of his teams loses a big game. Sorry about that.
All my love,
Jill

Sesame Street

Dear Mom,
Maybe it's because Jane's diapers have Big Bird and Cookie Monster on them, but I've been thinking a lot about the letter of the day. Today's letter is G.
G is for great Gramma. Not "great" in the sense of Jane's mother's grandmother but in the more common use of the adjective. The reason you're such a great Gramma is that you are so willing to be in charge of Janey's bath day. I am so terrified of giving Jane a bath! I don't know exactly what it is... I think there are just so many things that could possibly go wrong. When she's older, I think I'll feel more comfortable, but I'm really glad that you're so willing to help in the meantime. That kid would be crazy dirty if it wasn't for you!
Today, G is also for Giants. The San Francisco Giants. The World Series trophy was in town today and Auntie Em was DYING to go with Little Miss to see the trophy. So we went!

Janey wasn't super happy about it the whole time...

But she perked up and got some good pictures with Auntie Em and the trophy.

Em was thrilled.

All my love,
Jill

Tummy Troubles

Dear Janey,
You have reached the point in your life where spitting up on people is no longer completely adorable. Last night you felt the urge to spit up all over me. I mean, it was allllll over. There was so much that when I pulled my shirt off to change it, there was still a thick line of it down the front of my body. That wouldn't have been so bad, except for the smell. When babies are strictly breast feeding, everyone tells you that the baby's bowel movements and vomit won't smell very much. Up to last night, that held true. This spit up was different though. I don't really know why, but it smelled BAD. The worst part was that I couldn't get the smell off of me! I tried everything, short of taking a bath in tomato juice. Finally, I had to settle for covering it up (a little) with perfume. It wasn't ideal, but it was all I could come up with.
With about 24 hours since the initial incident, we now think there was a little stomach acid mixed in with your spit up. You may have a bit of a stomach bug. You haven't been eating well all day today, and you've pooped quite a bit. I can't quite call it diarrhea, since you only take in breast milk and your poo always looks like that.
I just hope you feel better soon.
All my love,
Mommy

Talents from Heavenly Father

Dear Janey,
I will be the first to admit to you that I am a paranoid mother. I worry that you will be deprived of experiences because I don't know how to do certain things. For example, my mother can sew and cook, but I definitely lack those abilities. Your Auntie Em and DziaDzia are great at math and science, but I will struggle to help you with your homework in those areas once you leave middle school (and possibly before that). Aunt Amanda is artistic and is a skilled singer, dancer and musician, but you will be super embarrassed when you see me sing, dance or play an instrument... Even if its in the comfort of our own home.
I think it's highly likely that you ended up with some of those genes, since they run in your bloodline. If not, it's very possible you'll want to learn something else I can't teach you. I'll tell you right now that it will be a struggle for me to keep up in a lot of ways, and I'm going to hate it and love it all at once. Hate it because I'll want to spend as much time with you as humanly possible and love it because I want you to have everything you could ever need and want. I intend for you to never see these emotions come out in me, since I'm the parent and its my job to keep it together. I'll probably slip up. When I do, try to be patient with me. It's only because I love you so much.
All my love,
Mom

Running Around

Dear Janey,
We had quite a busy day today! A big part of it was random errands, but the biggest part was our first WIC class. There are some crazy people there. It was like stepping into the peopleofwalmart.com website. I think there were some parents who are doing the best with what they have, but there were others who just aren't trying at all. One couple fully admitted to letting their 3-month-old son watch cartoons. Cartoons! At three months! I won't lie... I judged them. I think we'll probably be seeing the same people at future classes, which could be interesting. I'm curious to see how some of these kids turn out.
But don't worry. You were totally the cutest baby there.
All my love,
Jill

Just Another Day

Dear Janey,
I've been reading the Little House books again. I hadn't read them since childhood and we got our own set as a gift this Christmas, so I thought I'd go for it. I forgot how good they are! I often find myself thinking how fun it would be to have a life like Laura Ingalls... But then I remember that I hate nature and I'd let my bladder explode before I'd pee in the woods. That snaps me out of it.
Other than that, today was pretty uneventful. You've been having these crazy evening tantrums, but it's probably due to some kind of growth spurt. It got so bad last night that we had to call in the cavalry (Gramma) to come over and relieve us for a while. She finally got you to sleep and then you gave me a break for several hours before you got hungry again. You've done much better tonight, but I still think you might not be getting enough to eat even though I'm feeding you constantly. I don't think my milk supply has quite caught up with your appetite. I hope I'm just being crazy, though. I'd really hate to know that I'm not taking care of you in the best possible way.
Also, you've recently started giggling in your sleep. IT'S THE CUTEST THING EVER!
All my love,
Mommy

Resolutions

Dear everyone,

I don't often make New Year's resolutions, but I'm going to try it this year.

I intend to:

•blog daily
•write to my darling Janey
•keep up on scrap booking of Jane's early life
•get my crap together in general in an attempt to be a better wife, mother, friend, daughter, sister, employee, etc.

That's all for tonight. Jane is in a terrible mood and I'm crazy tired.

All my love,
Jill
